10 Tips to Make Packing Incredibly Easier

10 Tips to Make Packing Incredibly Easier

One of the most exhausting, time-consuming and stressful things that come with moving is packing all your possessions. This painstaking task will take you days to complete.

You will need plenty of good quality packaging supplies as well. If you go through this process haphazardly, you will end up opening boxes and storage containers with broken and damaged items in your new home.

By following some handy packing and moving tips, you can avoid a lot of the difficult, back-breaking and nerve-racking work that comes with this important task. You can then ensure all your personal possessions will arrive at your new home safely and in good condition.

Here are some of these tips:

  1. Make a packing list

Before you start packing, go to all the rooms in your home and create a list of all the items you use the most. By doing so, you can keep and pack them all together and easily find them once you arrive at your new home.

You can use an app to make this checklist. Many apps offer reliable and easy-to-follow ways to inventory, organise, and pack all your belongings. If you don’t want to use an app, make sure you create your list by room.

Once you have created this checklist, you will have an easier time choosing the items that you can sell or donate. This will help reduce the things you will have to pack and move to your new home.

  1. Start packing early

Don’t wait until the last minute to begin packing. At least two months before your move, get all the supplies you need to start packing. These include boxes and other storage containers, bubble wraps, unprinted newsprint, packing tape, etc.

You can start boxing up the items you do not use often such as books, home décor and seasonal items at least a month before your move date.

  1. Designate a packing area

To avoid having a cluttered home, pick a room or corner that is rarely used to serve as your packing station.

Keep all your packing supplies in this area. Begin building boxes of assorted sizes so that you can easily grab them. Make sure all the other items you need are within easy reach as well.

  1. Prepare your boxes for packing

Although this may mean some additional work on your part, you will avoid a lot of costly accidents throughout the whole packing and moving process when you don’t skip this step.

Reinforce the bottom of all boxes with packing tape. Next, line them with crushed packing paper for extra cushioning.

  1. Pack all essential items in one box

Make a list of everything you will need during the first 24 hours you spend in your new home. These can include basic bathroom and cleaning supplies, toiletries, bedding, some kitchen and dining ware and utensils.

Pack these items together in one box so that can use them immediately in your new home.

  1. Put heavy items in small boxes

Although you will be tempted to get only large boxes so that you can put more items in them, don’t make this mistake. To have an easier time packing, moving and unpacking removal boxes, Sydney moving experts recommend getting different sizes of boxes and containers.

To help your removalists have an easier time carrying or moving your boxes, put heavy items such as books, cookware, and sporting gear in small boxes. Pack light items like blankets, linen, and pillows in bigger ones.

  1. Bundle all breakables properly

When packing your dishes, cover each with packing paper. Next, wrap bundles of five or six together with more paper. Put additional crumpled paper as padding inside the box where you will place them.

When placing the dishes inside the box, pack them on their sides and never flat.  Once you fill a box, cover them with crumpled paper for additional cushion and protection as well. Next, seal the box properly.

When packing cups and bowls, place them inside one another with pieces of paper in between.  Wrap three or four in a bundle with paper. For maximum protection, pack them in dish-barrel boxes.

To pack baking dishes and glass mixing bowls, tuck them inside the folds of bedding. You will save on boxes and ensure they won’t be damaged, too.

  1. Maximise box space

Never leave empty spaces in the boxes. This will cause breakables to move which can cause them to be damaged.  You can avoid this by filling in gaps with clothing, towels, or packing paper.

In addition, you can protect your breakables by wrapping and taping blankets and towels around them. It’s a great way to keep them safe and save on boxes at the same time.

  1. Utilise other possible storage containers

If you have a number of suitcases and large bags, put some items inside them. You can also use some furniture items (such as cabinets and drawers), but don’t overcrowd them, and ensure they are securely shut and taped up.

Make sure all these makeshift storage containers are closed and locked properly to prevent the items inside from spilling out.

  1. Label all boxes properly

Lastly, ensure you will have an easier time finding things and unpacking all your boxes by labelling them properly. If possible, include details of the content of each box. In case the box holds too many items, label it stating the room it is destined for.
